I Am Unworthy Servant.】
English follows
【Scripture】“ “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ””Luke 17:7-10 NIV
【Observation】Before telling this parable, in verses 1–6, Jesus taught His disciples to:① Not cause others to stumble, and ② Forgive others as often as necessary.Upon hearing this, the disciples asked Him, “Increase our faith.”However, Jesus said that this was not a matter of faith. Later, through the parable of the master and the servant, Jesus tells us not to view serving God as a matter of our own merit or right, but to fulfill it humbly and faithfully as a grace and duty given by God. Just as a servant works for his master, He tells us to humbly and faithfully fulfill the duties of not causing others to stumble and forgiving them repeatedly as tasks entrusted to us by God.
【Application】Like the disciples, I often tend to think in terms of the degree of my faith. However, in this case, it is a matter of humility—faithfully ensuring that others do not stumble and continuing to forgive them.
【Prayer】Lord, even if I obey Your commands, may I never boast about my obedience or assert my rights before You. May I be able to say, “I am an unworthy servant; I have only done what You told me to do.” 🙏
