Sunday Is the Time to Do God’s Work】
English follows
【Scripture】“and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?””Luke 13:11, 13-14, 16 NIV
【Observation】For the synagogue ruler, healing was work. Therefore, he argued that one must not work on the Sabbath. The Sabbath exists, first and foremost, for people to give thanks for God’s grace and to grant rest to others. Jesus, however, is saying that it is precisely on the Sabbath that we should perform God’s work. After all, freeing the woman whom Satan had bound for eighteen years is what grants her rest.Like this synagogue official, have I perhaps allowed “keeping the rules” to take precedence over “loving others”?
【Application】If, by keeping God’s teachings, I am judging others, it means I do not truly understand God’s teachings and am merely imitating the outward form. Let me understand God’s teachings correctly and use Sundays to give rest both to myself and to others.
【Prayer】Lord, may I understand Your teachings correctly. May those who are burdened or bound be set free during our Sunday Services, may they be granted rest, and may Your work be done. 🙏
