GOD’S MERCY IS ON YOU

SCRIPTURE:

“Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack.  2 My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.  3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  4 In God, whose word I praise in God I trust and am not afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?  5 All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.  6 They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.  7 Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.  8 Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll are they not in your record? 9 Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise—11 in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? 12 I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.  13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.” (Psalms 56:1—13)

OBSERVATION:

King David knew that God was merciful, but his enemies were not.  David’s enemies were in hot pursuit of him all day long as they pressed their attack.  His adversaries were not letting up their attack. All day long, they pursue David.  All day long they twist his words.  All day long they scheme for David’s ruin.

David felt helpless and fearful of his enemies.  David prayed that God would not let these people who were pursuing him off his anger.  David wanted God to destroy his enemies.  David said, RECORD MY MISERY; LIST MY TEARS ON YOUR ROLL ARE THEY NOT IN YOUR RECORD?

Sometimes in our own lives, we face ferocious challenges in life.  Many challenges often reduce us to tears and wondering what God is doing.  Isn’t He aware of what my enemy is doing all day long?  Doesn’t God see my tears on his roll and records?  Often, things happen in our lives, and we feel hopeless.  My takeaway this morning encourages me to have the right focus when I face challenges in life.  While David was almost overtaken by his problem, He came to his sense and remembered these truths:

  • We are NEVER at the mercies of our challenges but at the mercy of our God.  Our challenges in life does not have the power of us.  We have God on our side.  David recognized that when he said this; Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this, I will know that God is for me.  When he called for God’s mercy, his enemies TURNED BACK.
  • Our enemies’ plans will NOT succeed.  When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.  4 In God, whose word I praise in God I trust and am not afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me? God is greater than your challenges and enemies, why should we fear?
  • We must always bring God into our problems in life.  David said; In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise—11 in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me? We must learn to always praise and trust God no matter what.
  • We must always give thanks at all times; David said; I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.  13 For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.”

APPLICATION:

This is such an uplifting and fitting word from King David.  How often I am focusing on the wrong thing.  When David’s enemies were in hot pursuit of him all day long, He look for mercy from God. While the enemy lurking around in the dark and planning David’s ruin, God was delivering David. I want to put my trust in God like David daily.  God is worthy of my praises and trust.  He is my deliverer.

PRAYER:

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for reminding me that you can deliver me from all the wiles and the works of the enemy.  I ask that you continue to remind me of your power to save and to help me in times of trouble.  Father lead me and guide me when the challenges of life pursue me mercilessly.  I thank you Jesus for your mercy and grace. Lead me to trust you more.  Amen!
