KEEP YOUR THOUGHTS ON JESUS

SCRIPTURE:

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. (Hebrews 3: 1—3)

OBSERVATION:

The writer of Hebrews encourages his brothers and sisters who share in the heavenly calling to FIX THEIR THOUGHTS ON JESUS.  The challenges the Hebrew believers faced coming out of Judaism were one of the problematic issues to confront.  The believers were still attached to the old way of connecting to God.  They are people who honor traditions.  The writer called them HOLY brothers and sisters.  This is important because it speaks about a unique believer’s relationship with Jesus.  We are being made holy by Christ.

All believers in a HOLY relationship with Jesus are also SHARE in the HEAVENLY CALLING.  Because all believers share in the heavenly calling, our thoughts must fixate on where Jesus is.  Jesus is the center of the believer’s thought life.  The Hebrew believers had the great honor of Moses as their leader.  It doesn’t matter how great a leader is or what tradition we are hung onto; we must decide whom we will follow.

We have a choice to make.  To follow our heavenly calling or to follow our traditions.  To follow Moses or great personalities before us that we admire or to follow Jesus.  We also have a choice of where we FIX OUR THOUGHTS.   The writer of Hebrews said Jesus had been found worthy of greater honor than Moses.  We acknowledge him as our apostle and high priest.  The writer of Hebrews is a Jew, and he valued his HEAVENLY calling over the traditions.

He recognized how JESUS HAS BEEN FOUND WORTHY OF GREAT HONOR THAN MOSES.  Knowing why Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses is essential.  We are kept in a holy relationship with Jesus.  He made us share in the heavenly calling.  Thus, our minds MUST fix on him.  Fix our thoughts on Jesus over our Christian culture and traditions.  Let Christ be the most critical thought in our minds and heart.

APPLICATION:

It is a challenge to keep the focus on Jesus when I allow other issues to occupy my mind and heart.  Sometimes I find it difficult to divorce my mind from Christian and church traditions to focus on Jesus purely. I am committed today to FIX MY THOUGHTS on Christ.  I am committed to having Jesus lead and direct me and not allowing church and Christian traditions to dictate my life.

PRAYER:

Jesus, help me to fix my thoughts on you.  Thank you for reminding me of who we are in you.  Thank you for calling us to share in your holiness and your heavenly calling.  Please teach me how to keep my mind stays on you.  Help me to honor you more than church and Christian traditions.  In your name, I pray, Amen!
