Let’s Rejoice That He Has Returned to His Father!】
English follows
【Scripture】“But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’”Luke 15:29-30 NIV
【Observation】The older brother was angry. Seeing his younger brother’s failures, he believed his brother did not deserve a blessing—but rather, punishment. Yet, even though he himself had served his father for many years and received no blessing from him, his younger brother—who had done wrong to their father—was being blessed. The older son was angry because he felt it was unfair. What would I do if a brother or sister in the church sinned, repented, and returned to the church? If a non-Christian repents of their sins and believes in Jesus, I would welcome them with open arms and accept them unconditionally. But when someone who has served the church for many years sins, repents, and returns to the church, will I be able to welcome them unconditionally?Instead of rejoicing that they have returned to the Father, might I be focusing on the sin they committed and thinking they should be punished? If so, am I not just like that older brother?
【Application】Instead of focusing on the sin they have committed, I will look to the fact that they have returned to the Father, rejoice, and accept them.
【Prayer】Lord, I have served You for many years, yet I have come to lose sight of Your grace, and without realizing it, I have become like that older brother. Lord, teach me Your grace once again and grant me Your heart. Transform me into someone who joyfully welcomes all who repent and return to You—whether they are non-Christians or Christians—without distinction. 🙏
