Lord, Please Change Me So That I May Become a Neighbor!】

English follows

【Scripture】“But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?””Luke 10:29 NIV

【Observation】The expert in the law asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” In other words, it seems he asked this question because, even though he knew the term “neighbor,” he didn’t know how far his love should extend, so he wanted to know where the boundaries lay. Later, through the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus explained, “Your neighbor is not simply someone within a certain radius whom you are supposed to love; rather, a person becomes your neighbor when you approach them with a heart of compassion.” In other words, whether we treat someone as a stranger or as a neighbor is up to us.

【Application】This morning, I saw a man sleeping in the bicycle parking lot of a pachinko parlor. I think he was probably drunk and had fallen asleep. However, I didn’t help him. It was Sunday, and I was in a hurry to get to church; plus, he had tattoos, and I didn’t want to get involved with him. On my way, I passed a police box and considered telling the officers about him, but I didn’t. I simply didn’t want to get involved with him. I was just like the priest and the Levite who passed him by. Yes, I refused to be that person’s neighbor.

【Prayer】Lord, I thought I was on the side of the Good Samaritan. But the truth is, I am just like the priest and the Levite who passed by, and I thank You for showing me how prideful I have been. I humble myself before You. Lord, please transform me into someone who reaches out to others and becomes a neighbor to them. 🙏
