自分のいのちを捨てること To Love Is to Lay Down my Life】

【御言葉】
“だれも、わたしからいのちを取りません。わたしが自分からいのちを捨てるのです。わたしには、それを捨てる権威があり、再び得る権威があります。わたしはこの命令を、わたしの父から受けたのです。」”
ヨハネの福音書 10章 18節

【観察】
この当時、このイエス様の言葉の意味をどれ程の人達が理解できたことだろう。多分、誰も理解出来なかったと私は思う。
ここで注目すべきことはイエス様が自分からいのちを捨てたことだ。確かに父の命令でもあったが、イエス様の意思でもあった。父の命令に従うことも、私達のためにいのちを捨てる決断をしたのも、全て愛が動機である。私はまだ羊のために喜んでいのちを捨てる覚悟がない。なぜなら、愛がなければ、いのちを捨てられないからだ。

【適用】
愛するとはいのちを捨てること。自分のいのちを捨てるには、神を愛すること。

【祈り】
主よ、あなたを愛する愛を私に増し加えてください。私は自分のいのちを愛する愛が強過ぎて、あなたを愛する愛がないのです。ですから、自分のいのちを捨てられません。もし自分のいのちを捨てられるなら、そんな自由なことはありません。喜んで自分のいのちを捨てるため、あなたへの愛を増し加えてください。

【Scripture】
John 10:18 NIV
[18] No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

【Observation】
I wonder how many people at that time truly understood the meaning of these words of Jesus. I think it’s likely that no one understood them.
What we should focus on here is that Jesus laid down His life of His own accord. While it was certainly the Father’s command, it was also Jesus’ own will. Both obeying the Father’s command and making the decision to lay down His life for us were motivated entirely by love. I am not yet prepared to gladly lay down my life for the sheep. This is because, without love, I cannot lay down my life.

【Application】
To love is to lay down one’s life. To lay down one’s life requires loving God.

【Prayer】
Lord, please increase my love for You. My love for my own life is so strong that I lack love for You. That is why I cannot lay down my life. If I could lay down my life, there would be no greater freedom. Please increase my love for You so that I may joyfully lay down my life. 🙏
