DON’T WORRY

SCRIPTURE:

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  (Matthew 6:25—34)

OBSERVATION:

Jesus warns his disciples about worrying about their life, what they should eat or drink, their bodies and what to wear.  Life is so much more than food, drinks, and clothing.  Jesus points his disciples to learn from the birds of the air.  They do not sow, reap or store away in barns, yet their heavenly Father feeds them.  God knows what we need.  An exciting thing to learn from birds, they don’t station themselves in one place.  They fly here and there and find food not in one place but in many places.  Jesus is saying that we do not depend only on our work to supply because God has so much more than what we earn with our own strength.

God’s provision is not limited to what one can earn by working hard.  God has other means of providing if we trust him, he will lead us to it.   Worrying is NOT healthy for anyone.  Worry does not add a single hour to our lives.  Instead, it might take away our life. People worry about clothes and what to wear.  Simply, it is not a matter of not having anything to wear, but because people are always after this fashion and that fashion and find themselves in clothes that fill their closets.

Worry makes people run and pursue all the things that cause them to worry.  Worry blinds people from seeing God as a Father who can provide for them. Anxiety causes people to trust in themselves and find no time for God.  One of the causes of people not wanting to follow God is because they worry that He cannot provide for them.  We have a choice.  We can live in a kingdom we create for ourselves or trust our needs to God and have him be our provider.

Jesus said that instead of running after the things that worry us, we must run after the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and he will provide for us everything that we need.  He will give us everything that we hope for.  Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow.  God is here today. We must trust Him for Today.  Tomorrow has yet to arrive.  I must not waste today’s energy to worry about what tomorrow needs.

APPLICATION:

I know it is not good to worry, but I do occasionally.  What a great reminder to trust Jesus, for he already knows what I need.  I choose to trust Him today and rely on Him as my provider and that He fully knows well all that I need.

PRAYER:  Jesus, please teach me to seek you and to place your priorities first in my life.  I thank you that you know fully what I need. Please continue to teach me how to trust you fully for all I need.  I need you daily. Amen!
